I have a canon powershot now and it is sooooo sllllllooooowwww. by the time it takes the photo my baby is no longer smiling or rolling over, etc. I want good quality too, so I can make large images, but I really want something faster, small and campact. Any suggestions?
max price?
are you talking about from power off - to - shoot? or shutter lag?
you need a camera with manual controls…
the questionaire said “small and COMPACT”… please, no dSLR suggestions!

I’m sorry this is a crummy answer (not what you were asking), but have you thought of an SLR?
They’re much faster than your average point and shoot. Crisper images, etc.
If size is something that concerns you, the Olympus E-420 is a tidy little shooter.
But if you really want a point and shoot, go to your local shop and play a bit with the Canon G9/G10. Neither is great (or very good…) under low light, but they’re quick enough, small enough, have enough features.
